So, if I got this right, for +/- $5000 in payoff, you don’t have to graduate from an NCARB college to be an architect.

http://ncarb.org/~/media/Files/PDF/Dire ... ation.ashx

Truth be told, (as I have said on this board,) I don’t really have a problem many aspects of this… If someone wants to learn structural engineering at night to fulfill that part of the exam, they are a better man than I.

I does feel kind of fee driven and dirty to me though. But perhaps I need more time to think about it. The interviews would be pretty crucial.

Dave

David - we discussed this in some degree of detail on the topic I started about everybody becoming architects. The issue is that this is a path to an NCARB certificate, not a path to license. Individual states can still choose to honor, or not honor a BEA NCARB certificate. So this will not get you in the door universally. Each state still has the last word.

An NCARB certificate is something that impresses me!

I don't mean to imply that an NCARB certificate is not impressive - but it does not = license. States have the discretion to turn away an application no matter.

I would have to guess that NCARB certified schools requirements are (relatively) new. This certainly does not mean that any school of architecture that was not certified in the past was a bad school. In my view it also does not mean every current school is good. It means that they are examined by NCARB have provided the proper forms and documentation and offer a curriculum that is consistent with other colleges.

My wife certifies schools for ABET (the engineering side) and I can assure you that they are not evaluating individual teacher or student competence. Only that the program is structured properly and qualifications are met.

You can see from Matt's stairway to architecture data that it is not clear how well they are tying actual performance to the college. It would be a very difficult thing to do since passing the ARE is not necessarily a requirement for working in the field of architecture and so pass rates will depend on other things besides quality of education.

NCARB does not certify schools.

NAAB certifies schools. http://www.naab.org/ They evaluate schools and "Accredit" their programs.

NCARB simply regards NAAB Accredited schools differently than non-accredited schools.

SIGH. haven't we been through this before in other threads? It always frustrates me that even architects don't understand this stuff.

I take full responsiblity for interchanging NCARB for NAAB in error over and over again since this board was started... I am sorry

No, by no means does this fall on anybody singularly. Many architects just don't remember, or never understood.

Well that was more of a technicality. In this case the conversation was about accredited programs the fact that it is NAAB and not NCARB is important but does not change the discussion.
