Frank Gehry's new club house on Abu Dhabi's new premier golf course. The next Newport Country Club or Shinnecock Hills? No... simple sculpture with program insert upon it... dogsh*t. http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/in ... id=13304er

Was he inspired by Lady GaGa's wardrobe?

that Gehry model looks like someone picked up some debris from Haiti and dropped it into Dubai.
Gaga: the first literal post modernist pop singer

While I appreciate your comment, and share your feeling about Gehry's work (for the most part), I also believe in the contextual nature of it. Abu Dahbi is not Shinnecock, or St. Andrews. As an F-1 fan, I was blown away by the architecture at the newly built circuit here last fall. http://www.formula1.com/gallery/race/2009/823/. Its not Monaco, but then what else is? Gehry can do the same thing for golf.

I thought about it, but it comes across as sour grapes to me. And the the reference to Vitruvious is like a reveal that you are a classicist. Any architect interested in contemporary design would pass on responding because the assumption would be that you would be getting into a head butting match with somebody that has a regressive outlook. The assumption is nothing useful will come from the discussion. I know I wouldn't touch it. I wouldn't even want to validate by touching it.

So what's that mean when you protest, and nobody can even be bothered to confront you. You are very alone in your opinion I'm afraid.

here is something more palatable:

http://archrecord.construction.com/resi ... efault.asp

a fortune to build, for the square footage....

notice the steel beams everywhere! and extreme cantilevers... ahh the perfect client for the Miesian extravagance!

wow: check out the comments too!! this is in AR!!

(I just added the FLW comment)

Is this really any more over the top than most of David's best work? What am I missing...?

Greg, this Greek Modern house has to be way over David's stuff, or any traditional design for that matter -- unless completely frou-froued -- for the same build area per ratio of materials and design: steel, glazing and cantilever.
Also, no moldings or trim in modernist interiors to cover framing irregularities. Level of precision higher. Look at the cantilevers in that house!

you are nit-picking things we'll never know. They are both custom designs and both have the indulgences that go along with that. I can't see how you can fault one without faulting the other.

This in the end is more style bigotry. I just don't think it does anything for our cause. David posts this here - calls it dog-shit. I wish I had dime for every indulgent traditional design I come across that I could post here with similar commentary. David's distinction of sculpture as architecture is weak at best - nobody that needs a house cares about this distinction. Maybe somebody for whom a house is a chance to play with art it matters, but that is so outside my world, and so outside the broad housing market I just don't see why this is a good platform to air these grievances.
